It's been more than a decade since she was seen on screen as the unchallenged diva of Hindi films. Times have changed and Bollywood has evolved - for better and for worse. New faces, better make-up and less melodrama is the face of new-age Bollywood. As I waited for Sridevi at her beautifully-done Chennai home, I am somewhat sceptical... Would she have changed from the beautiful Chandni of Yash Chopra's super hit by the same name? or would time have left a mark on her too? When she breezed in for our shoot- refreshing in a Manish Malhotra printed top and soft blue jeans - I was taken aback. She still made the perfect picture: Flawless features, an hourglass figure, a smile just as brilliant as it was back then, and all of it dressed in impeccable manners. The camera beckoned and it became evident that Sridevi had not lost touch with the actor in her either. She posed, smiled, modeled... All the charming grace. A decade may have separated her and showbiz but she is still very much the star.

A STAR WAS BORN.... At a tall 5'7 she towers over everyone, but that's not the only reason why you notice her. She was and is, quite simply the perfect Indian beauty with large, expressive eyes, sharp features and an appealing child-like expression. The camera had noticed her even as a child of four, back in the 1960s. Recalls the actor "My father's brother (A politician) couldn't make it to one of the functions he was invited to so he asked my father to go instead. I went along with him. It was there that Kaviarasar, the famous Kannada poet, spotted me. He came over and asked Dad if he'd be willing to let me act. Flustered, Dad asked for a little time to think and then took me home to talk things over with my mother. She was very excited about the whole thing. While the discussion was going on, Kaviarasar himself arrived at our home. My parents gave in. Karviarasar introduced me to Devar (a Kannada director) and persuaded him to cast me as the child Lord Muruga in his movie, Thunaivan. In between, Devar asked mother to shave my hair for the role but she put her foot down and almost whisked me off the sets. Finally, I played baby Muruga with longer hair" (And of course baby Sridevi looked utterly adorable) It was on the sets of Thunaivan that MG Ramachandran spotted Sridevi and signed her on for Nam Naadu (1969). And a spate of films began. Soon she was a star and still not 10!! Her parents tried to keep everything normal. Though she stopped attending school in the first grade and began doing almost 2-3 shifts a day, her father saw to it that led as regular a life as possible. "Dad made sure that I was always surrounded by family members- not to spoil or mollycoddle me but retain a "family" atmosphere. He came from a well- educated family, and being a lawyer himself, he made sure that I did not miss my education. A home tutor was always there either on my long shoots or whenever there was a break between shootings". No wonder then that despite her meteoric rise in Tamil cinema down the years, Sridevi remained grounded. "My mother always told me that I was an obedient and quiet child, not fussy about anything. I remember once, she was talking to a neighbor and had made me sit on the parapet wall. She went in for some reason and forgot about me. After a couple of hours she realized that I was missing. She ran out to check on me and found me sitting in the same place!!" Sridevi became a full fledged 'Heroine" even before she became a teen, starring opposite Rajnikanth and Kamal Hassan in K Balachandran's Moondru Mudichu (1976). She became a major star with Bharati Rajja's debut film Pathinaru Vayathinile (1977) Its Hindi remake Solva Sawan (1979) was her first Hindi film. Though she was incredibly young, she was completely convincing in grown-up romantic roles. " I was too young to realize what I was doing. Whenever I had to give a romantic expression, I used to burst in peals of Laughter. K Balachandran told my parents to let me watch some good romantic films. That didn't' help and finally he gave up one day, saying that I should just keep a sad face and that would work better. So I followed orders and looked sad - trembling lips and all - the audience mistook it for intensity and adour!" she laughs out loud. Despite her height, Sridevi looks fragile and petite. He mannerism are delicate, her hand movements controlled and her smile ready at hand... But the unassuming behavior notwithstanding, she is every inch the diva and I am somewhat wary of venturing into personal questions. However, she is fairly direct, though she doesn't like getting too personal. And she does retain her sense of humor at all times. Though her speech is free of accent, the south Indian in her slips through in the occasional "Aiyyo" all adding up to amore "real" picture. All through the photo shoot, Sridevi insists we eat something - ordering us tea, nariyal pani, tuna and cheese sandwiches. Her warm hospitality breaks the ice and put us completely at ease.

BEAUTY WITHIN...... In her 40s now, Sridevi can give any starlet a run of her money. A flawless complexion, a fantastic body and looks to kill for! " I believe that if you're healthy within, it will reflect on your skin and hair. But if you eat a lot of oily, fried and junk food, all the facials in the world won't help. I try and follow on an organic diet as much as possible. Even my daughters now eat brown rice... They follow my diet not as a compulsion but because they are health - conscious even at this tender age. I eat fish but very little chicken, and when I'm at home I prefer to be vegetarian. I do exercise and though I would love to go to the gym every day, my travel schedules make that impossible. But I love my power - yoga sessions. I believe that you have to feel positive and respect yourself and that's what reflects in your looks." When I complimented her on her toned body, she declares "My husband and my children want me to look great all the time, It is only the joy on their faces when I look beautiful that encourages me to be the way I am. They are my motivation"

OF PERSONAL TURMOILS.... Sridevi was very close to her parents and there is a renewed pain in her voice when she talks about them. "My parents were lovely people, they installed good manners in me, taught me to respect elders and always guided me. In fact the first time I was away from my parents for a long time was during the shooting of Gurudev, Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja and Lamhe which were shot back - to - back, overseas. Every morning before I left for my shoot, I made sure I spoke to my parents, they called me without fail. One particular morning. I never got a call from my father and the next thing I was told that he was ill, but the truth was that he was no more... and the same thing happened at the time of my mother's death - I was away on a shoot for the filming of Judaai when she passed away" Sridevi went against societal norms and lit her mother's funeral pyre. It's delicate question so I hesitate in putting it to her in her direct style. Sridevi answers candidly but is visibly emotional "My mother had always thought of me as her son , she used to tell me that. My lighting the funeral pyre was simply my way of paying homage to her belief in me. It was a traumatic and emotional decision but I had to do it"

A LIFE BEYOND STARDOM..... Sridevi's marriage to Boney Kapoor in 1996, a married man, came as a shock to the industry and her fans across the country. Many in the film industry raised eyebrows and the media had a field day going to town about how Boney's wife raised a shindy and much more. Through it all, Sridevi maintained a stoic, dignified silence and simply retreated from the limelight to bask in the joys of family life.... Slowly, the world accepted the new Mrs. Boney Kapoor and the mud slinging died a natural death. Once again the actor candid, though she doesn't mention Boney's earlier life "Boney came to me in 1984 to sign me to play Seema, the lead female role for Mr India. He confessed later, that he fell in love with me outright! He however did take a few years to sort out his life before formally proposing to me in 1993. I fell in love with him when I got to know the real him. It was difficult, traumatic even and it took me many years to finally accept the fact that I was destined to be with Boney. In hindsight, I only wish that I had realized and accepted his love for me sooner. I always believe in following my heart and I am glad that I did. My parents had passed away by then and my sister was shocked with my decision. But now, she shares a great relationship with my husband and is convinced that he is the best thing that ever happened to me! The same goes for my in laws. I share a fantastic relationship with them. My mother in law adores me and I always try to pamper her because she loves to be spoilt by me. I can also never forget the support and strength I got from my sister in law Sunita (actor Anil Kapoor's wife) all through and the love I got from Boney's sister, Reena. The affectionate bond I share with Boney's youngest brother, Sanjay and his wife Maheep is also a lifeline!"

WEARING MANY HATS..... After her marriage, Sridevi took a break from movies in order to raise a family. "Jhanavi and Khushi are my life. I have adopted a balanced approach in bringing up them up. I'm neither too strict nor I do pamper them too much. My husband keeps telling me that I am the best mother ever" shows off the actor' proudly. Her daughters were present at the shoot - blessed with pleasant mannerisms and perfect diction, they were breeze to talk to, a far cry from the usual image of tantrum prone star children. Sridevi also dipped into production "I have contributed in every film of my husband's. Direction is extremely difficult and I really don't think I am cut out for it. Which is why I keep thanking my directors over and over - my success is due to their hard work." The inherent humility in the star is an aspect of her personality that surfaced now and again throughout the time I spent talking to her. Sometime ago, she was on TV playing Malini Iyer in the serial by the same name - "I played a south Indian bahu married into a Punjabi family, which I am! I had a ball"

BOLLYWOOD CALLING..... On the work front, though she has now been on a long sabbatical, she is still remembered for the sheer variety and number of roles she played on the Hindi film screen. Even before Solva Sawan, Sridevi had her firs brush with Hindi films when she acted as Irene, younger sister to Julie in the 1975 hit by the same name. Four years later Solva Sawan bombed, but Sridevi had been noticed for her flawless looks. Her next movie Himmatwala 1983 went on to be a super success. Sridevi became a country wide star overnight. This was followed by Sadma (1983) which is hailed as a classic even today and remains the most definitive child-woman performance in Indian cinema. Sridevi plays an outgoing party girl Laxmi, who meets with an accident. She emerges from a coma with absolutely no memory and has the mental and physically skills of a 6 year old. It's a touching story with Laxmi being befriended by school teacher Somu (Kamal Hassan). Her third film in Bollywood, it was considered to be a bold move as it indicated a shift to arty cinema. Says the star "I have never been fully satisfied with my performances and always thought I could have done better. Whatever praise I got for the film, the credit goes to the director though I do believe that Sadma was and is one of my best films" Throughout the 1980s Sridevi starred in a galaxy of blockbusters, including Tohfa, Nagina, Mr India, Chandni and Chaalbaaz, the last which won her a Filmfare Award for her delightfully crazy capers. When I ask her which of the twins (of Chaalbaaz) does she feel closer to in real life, the prim-and-proper Anju, or the funny wicked beer guzzling toughie Manju, the actor replies smiling " My husband says I was Anju before marriage and have been Manju thereafter" In 1991, her performance in Lamhe won her the International Film Academy's Best Actress Award, "Lamhe was a very well made movie, but yes, I was sceptical about the climax - a man who loved a woman, married her daughter in the climax of the film - I argued with Yashji. But ultimately he was the captain of the ship" Lamhe was hailed by the critics as a film beyond its timescape even though it didn't do too well at the box office. Sridevi was also a trendsetter in her own right - being one of the first non-singing stars to lend her voice to a song in Chandni by the same name. When asked about it, she appears embarrassed and says "I felt sorry for Yashji - The song was easy for me to sing but difficult for others who had to hear my bathroom singer's voice onscreen!" Chandni was also when Sridevi got an image makeover. From a typical somewhat traditional south Indian beauty (Some critics even labeled her "Thunder Thighs" based on her appearance in Tamil films), she metamorphosed into a classy contemporary beauty with a svelte body and contoured face yet maintaining he basic Indian-ness. As in her career, she achieved this transformation by sheer dint of careful planning and hard work "I always believed in hard work, to try and give my best in whatever I did. I never had or believed in godfathers. Whatever I have achieved as an actor is due to my directors. They are the reason for my transformation" I mull over her words as I head towards the airport. Sridevi was born and brought up in Sivakasi, a district in Tamil Nadu. Her mother tongue is Tamil. Her father's name was Ayyapan (a lawyer) and her mother's name was Rajeswari. Tara Sharma is an Indian actress.

The daughter of well-known author and actor, Partap Sharma and an alumnus of the London School of Economics, she made her debut in 2002 with Anupam Kher's Om Jai Jagadish. Despite having a huge star cast which included Waheeda Rehman and Anil Kapoor, the film did not do well. After that she made an appearance in the popular British police series The Bill. Her first hit came with the comedy Masti (2004). This was followed by the critically acclaimed film Page 3 (2005). Her performance was appreciated by the critics.

There has been criticism levelled at Preity Zinta recently for wearing a sequinned denim mini skirt when her character in Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna is supposed to be a fashion editor. Some fashionistas have slammed it as inappropriate dressing keeping the character in mind. But before we take sides we can take a look at the long route fashion in movies have taken. Movies are a visual treat. In two dimension, we get to see stories and dramas enacted for us, for our entertainment. Right from the beginning, the discerning filmmaker took care to see that all the elements of his movie pleased the viewing public. Which included a good story, good locales, good looking actors with good clothes. Even as early as 1948 the costume drama Chitralekha wowed the audiences by its grandoise sets and beautiful costumes.

By 1951 the movies were getting slicker and we were treated to the beautiful Madhubala wearing pretty diphanous sarees and trendy boyish clothes in movies like Mr. & Mrs 55 and Chalti ka Naam Gadi. But the lady who really had followers for her style was Sadhana. Sadhana’s famous fringe came to be known as Sadhana cut. She practically invented the churidars. These were supposed to be worn under a frock like top worn by muslim girls. Sadhna wore the tight churidar under a kurta and started a trend that never went away.

Waqt was a movie that set off a trend of sorts. It was a multistarer, Balraj Sahni, Raj Kumar, Sunil Dutt and Shashi Kapoor with the beautiful Achla Sachdev, stylish Sadhna and trendy Sharmila. The look and feel of the movie was lavish and the costumes and hair of of the ladies, very trendy. Women saw the movie time and time over, wishing to copy the various salwar kameezes, sarees, hair clips and do’s. Pale lipstick with heavy eyeliner became the accepted way to make up the face. The bouffant became more and more pronounced with each new movie, with strips of hair pasted down the side of the face. The eyeliner became thicker and blacker, lips pouty and pale pink. Some people even wondered how the women managed to act, being so trussed. Sharmila Tagore propogated this look to the accompaniment of many a nakhra and tosses of the head.

Later the women rid the rigid churidar or sarees routine and slipped into the easy tights with kurta. Bouffant still in place, eyes slanted with the liberal application of the eyeliner, Asha Parekh danced with abandon and sang ‘Aa aa aaja’ in Teesri Manzil, with Shammi Kapoor shaking his head and hands. But even then, the movies followed a kind of a trend. In the courtship scenes, usually with the heroine slapping the hero at least once and yelling ‘You Rascal’, the girl wore salwar or churidar or tights. Later, after the wooing was done, she would slip into a saree. Maybe to let the public know that here was a serious homemaker, not a frivolous college girl.

But the movie that changed that was Bobby. Dimple wears frocks and mini’s throughout the movie, giving it a youthful look. Thankfully, almost for the first time the teenagers in the movie were teenagers, and not middle aged people. Rishi and Dimple set the mood by wearing trendy clothes throughout. Dimple wore hardly any makeup and her hair was let loose naturally. Zeenat Aman brought in the trendy simple looks by wearing pantsuits and short skirts with hair parted in the middle without any frills. Suddenly the nation’s young people breathed easy and wore bell bottoms and the casual look really came into vogue.

By 80s there were really young heroines like Neelam who dressed like any other youngster. Sridevi could wear anything, pants, salwaars and sarees. Some more Yash Chopra films ushered in new fashions, the white salwar kurta in Chandani, the blue saree in Mr. India. The atrocious make up was firmly out of the picture and the look was either very ghaerlu – as favored by Jaya Prada, with a long plait, gajra and saree. Or skirts and dresses and khajuri choti worn by Neelam.

But 90s started the revolution in dress designing. Starting with Rangeela when Manish Malhotra designed the entire look of Urmila Matondkar, seeing that she lost weight and looked great in the trendy clothes he handpicked for her, overseeing the makeup to create the gamin look. From then on, the movie heroine could not afford to look gauche. She has discovered personal trainers. No more thunder thighes or thick biceps. The lady is kept toned, her skin clear and blemish free. Her hair is streaked or coloured and conditioned. Her clothes are designed to suit her personality and the character she plays in the movie.

Karisma Kapoor, sister Kareena, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherjee, Aishwarya Rai are some of the beneficiaries of this new trend. Rani Mukherjees long dowdy skirts were in keeping with the character she played as Michelle in Black. The same lady wore lovely sarees in as the bengali woman in Yuva, and burst out in trendy clothes in Hum Tum and Chalte Chalte. These days women routinely look for garish wedding clothes at the saas bahu TV serials and young girls seek to pick up fashion tips from the various movies playing around the town.

Sri Devi –who was popularly known in the industry as Thunder Thighs – is all set to make a comeback. She was the reigning queen in the eighties, with hits like Mr. India, Chaalbaaz, Sadma, Laadla, Lamhe, Khuda Gawah etc.

She made a foray on the TV screen as a come back, when she did the Malini Iyer serial for Sahara channel.

On the 24^th of February she staged a simply superb performance for the 52^nd Filmfare awards function. She danced a medley of the 80’s and was mind blowingly beautiful and graceful.

A sequel to Mr. India is being planned, and Yash Chopra is also planning a movie in which she will star with Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Aishwariya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan. Her husband Boney Kapoor is also planning a big movie for her comeback.

17 years after Chandni and with two beautiful daughters - Jhanvi and Khushi, Sri Devi has still maintained the charm and glamour that surrounds her persona. For an actor with such flair and talent, which is evident – it would be impossible to keep her away, from the call of the spotlights.

So both the yesteryear queens - Madhuri and Sri Devi, will be back to rock Bollywood.

Sridevi is one of the leading South Indian actresses who had dominated both bollywood films and South Indian films in the 80s. She impressed the viewers with her notable performance in the film Himmatwala, opposite Jeetender and the dancing skills of both of them brought a new dimension to bollywood films.

Mr. India was directed by Shekhar Kapoor with a topic related to fantasy where a person, by wearing a technological gadget could be invisible. Anil Kapoor became Mr India and destroyed the evil plans of Amrish Puri, by becoming invisible. Sri Devi acted as a journalist who stayed in Anil Kapoor’s house as a tenant and showed her comedy skills along with romantic skills and powerful dancing.


She had acted in the hit films of the leading actors of that time including Akhree Rasta, opposite Big B, Chandni, opposite Rishi Kapoor. She even had done well in double roles, like the one played in the film Chaalbaaz, opposite Sunny Deol and Rajnikant. She had carried on the rich legacy of acting and dancing displayed by other leading actresses of South India, like Vaijayantimala, Hema Malini, and showed that dancing can be displayed as creative arts.

The audience expects her to re-enter bollywood films, by acting in character roles in future.

  MUMBAI: Noted Bollywood actress Sridevi on Friday moved a court in Mumbai seeking stay of a bailable warrant issued against her by a lower court in a cheque bouncing case.
  
  The sessions court will hear her application on Monday. Earlier, the Kurla Metropolitan Magistrate court had issued a bailable warrant against the actress for not appearing in a cheque bouncing case filed against her by two businessmen.

Sridevi , born on August 13, 1963, is an Indian actress who has starred in hundreds of Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam language films. She started acting at the age of four, and made her debut as an adult in the early 80s. She established herself as one of the leading actresses of her times, and although Sridevi left the industry in 1997, she has been regarded by the industry members, as one of the most talented and prominent actresses of India.

Sridevi was born and brought up in Sivakasi, a district in Tamil Nadu. Her mother tongue is Tamil. Her father's name was Ayyapan (a lawyer) and her mother's name was Rajeswari. Sridevi has a sister, Srilatha. She has two step brothers from her father's previous marriage. Her father died while she was filming Lamhe, her mother while she was making Judaai. Although it is the Hindu custom that the son lights the funeral pyre, Sridevi lit the pyre for her mother's last rites.

Sridevi married film producer Boney Kapoor on June 2, 1996. Boney and his first wife Mona Shourie Kapoor had accommodated Sridevi in their home during Sridevi's stay in Mumbai.At that time Boney and Mona had been married for several years and had two children Arjun and Anshula. Mona Kapoor stayed in Boney Kapoor's parents home for 10 years after the divorce to give her children a sense of family. Boney Kapoor and Sridevi have two daughters: Jhanvi and Khushi. Through her husband she is related to the large Surinder Kapoor film clan (see List of Bollywood film clans). Actor Anil Kapoor, her co-star in a number films, is her brother-in-law.

Sridevi started her career as a child artist in the Tamil movie Kandhan Karunai (1967) and acted in many Tamil and Telugu movies. During her early adult career, she acted in a number of Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam movies. Many of her Malayalam movies were directed by I. V. Sasi. Some examples of her notable Malayalam movies are: Aadhyapaadam, Aalinganam, Kuttavum Sikshaiyum, Aa Nimisham. In 1976, Sridevi got her first big break as a heroine in K. Balachander's Moondru Mudichu, where she starred opposite Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth. In many ways, this movie was a landmark in Tamil filmdom. It was also one of Rajnikanth's first major movies.

After Moondru Mudhchu, Sridevi had a succession of huge hits with both these Tamil superstars. With Kamal Haasan, she acted in movies such as Guru, Sankarlal, Sigappu Rojakkal, Thaayillamal Naanillai, Meendum Kokila, Vaazhve Maayam, Varumaiyin Niram Sigappu, Neela Malargal, Moondram Pirai, 16 Vayathinile. With Rajnikanth, she acted in movies such as Dharmayuddham, Priya, Pokkiri Raja, Thanikattu Raja, Adutha Varisu, Nan Adimai Illai, etc. Sridevi was the number one actress in Tamil films during the period 1979-83.

During the same time, Sridevi also made inroads into Telugu language movies. She acted with all major heroes in Telugu. A number of her Telugu movies were made by K. Raghavendra Rao. With N. T. Rama Rao, she acted in movies such as Konda Veeti Simham, Vetagadu, Sardar Paparayudu, Bobbili Puli etc. With A. Nageswara Rao, she acted in movies such as Mudulla Koduku, Premabhishekham, Bangaru Kanku, Premakanuka etc. With Krishna she acted in movies such as Kanchu Kagada, Kalavari Samsaram, Krishnavatharam, Borripellum Bolludu, Khaidi Rudrayya etc. After Kamal Haasan, Sridevi has acted the most number of movies with Krishna. Towards the tail end of her Telugu career, she started acting in Hindi movies. Many of her initial Hindi movies starred Jeetendra and were remakes of her Telugu movies, mostly directed by K. Raghavendra Rao, and K. Bappaiah.

In 1978, Sridevi starred in her first Hindi film, Solva Saawan which failed at the box office. However, her second movie, Himmatwala, went on to be a success and established her status in Bollywood. The film also earned her the famous nickname Thunder Thighs. This was followed by the critically acclaimed drama Sadma, which is often cited by critics as the most definitive child-woman performance of her career. Throughout the 1980s, she starred in a galaxy of box office hits, including Tohfa, Nagina, Mr. India, Chandni and Chaalbaaz, in which her double-role won her the first Hindi Filmfare Best Actress Award. The commercially successful Nagina is remembered for her iconic dance sequence in the film's climax. Her performance in Shekhar Kapur's blockbuster Mr. India won her rave reviews, and her comic-timing was praised. Yash Chopra's poetic fairy-tale mega-hit Chandni earned her another nomination at the Filmfare.

Yash Chopra again directed Sridevi in the path-breaking modern day classic Lamhe (1991), where the sensitive and intense double-role act immortalised her forever in Hindi Cinema. It also won her, her second Filmfare Best Actress Award. She followed it with acclaimed performances in films like Khuda Gawah, Gumrah and Laadla. Kshanam Kshanam released in 1992 won her the fourth Filmfare Best Actress Award. Sridevi is one of the few Bollywood actresses who dictated terms and for whom exclusive roles were written. The failure of the multicrore Roop ki Rani Choron ka Raja proved to be a major setback. After the drama Judaai (1997), she left the industry in order to marry filmmaker Boney Kapoor and raise her two daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi.

After a six-year hiatus, Sridevi returned to the small screen, briefly, in the popular Sahara sitcom Malini Iyer (2004-2005). She also appeared on Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai for Karishma Kapoor (2004) and as a judge in the TV show Kaboom (2005). She is a member of the Board of Directors at the Asian Academy of film and television. Sridevi performed a medley of some of the popular songs previously picturised on herself at the 52nd Filmfare Awards 2007.
